A crate's advertised size is a starting point, not a reliable measurement for its bedding. The space inside the tray can be smaller than the outside frame. Measure the area where the mat will lie before choosing a size.

What to measure

Use a tape measure, keep your measurements in inches, and write down both length and width. Measure the crate with its tray and any divider installed in the position you plan to use.

  1. Length: measure the usable floor from the inside of the front boundary to the inside of the back boundary.
  2. Width: measure between the inside edges at floor level. Check more than one point if the crate tapers.
  3. Obstructions: note raised tray lips, rounded corners, door hardware and divider feet that reduce the flat space.
  4. Height: consider how the bedding thickness affects the remaining room inside the crate.

Standard size or custom size?

Compare your measurements with the actual dimensions on the product page, rather than matching a crate's size label to a bed's size label. A mat should lie flat without bunching up against the sides. If the listed dimensions do not suit the usable floor, compare our custom-size crate mat.

Before placing a custom order, check the product's sizing increments, thickness and measurement instructions. Do not automatically add extra inches or subtract a fixed allowance: the right finished dimensions depend on the product and your crate. If a corner or divider makes the fit unusual, ask our team with your measurements and a photo before ordering.

Crate fit and dog fit are separate checks

A mat that fits the tray does not establish whether the crate is appropriate for your dog. For the bed itself, compare usable sleeping space and your dog's posture with our dog bed size guide. Recheck measurements whenever you move a divider or change crates.

Before you order

  • Record inside length and width, not outside frame dimensions.
  • Confirm the tray and divider positions.
  • Check fill, thickness and care instructions for the selected mat.
  • Review custom-order terms and ask about any uncertain measurements.
