What size dog bed do I need?

Choosing the right dog bed size is one of the most important factors in your dog's comfort. A bed that's too small can leave your dog cramped and unsupported, while a properly sized bed gives them room to stretch, curl up, and rest comfortably.

Measure your dog, think about how they sleep, then use the calculator below. You can also check the standard dog bed size chart and our breed size guide for a quick starting point.

Step by step

How to measure your dog

How to measure a dog for a dog bed A friendly floppy-eared dog stands in profile. A runs from nose to tail base. B runs from shoulder to floor.A · Nose to base of tailBShoulderto floorStand on a flat floor. Use a soft measuring tape.

Step 1: Measure length (A)

With your dog standing, run a soft tape from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not the tail tip).

Step 2: Measure height (B)

Measure from the floor straight up to the top of the shoulder blades.

Step 3: Add room to move

Add 6–12 inches to each measurement: 6–8 for small dogs, 8–10 for medium dogs, and 10–12 for large dogs. Sprawlers need extra length, and curlers can go round. On bolster or donut beds, your numbers should fit inside the bolsters.

Difference between inside and outside dog bed dimensions Outside dimensions (whole bed)Inside sleeping areaBolster

Inside vs. outside dimensions. Outside dimensions measure the whole bed. On bolster and donut beds, the usable sleeping area inside the bolsters is smaller, so compare your dog's measurements with the inside dimensions.

Sleep style

How does your dog sleep?

Curler

Sleeps in a tight ball and loves a cozy place to nest.

  • Round beds
  • Donut beds
  • Bolster beds

Recommended inside diameter = A + 6 in.

Sprawler

Stretches out on their side and needs the most room.

  • Rectangular beds work best
  • Measure their full stretched body length
  • Add 6–12 inches beyond that length

When in doubt, size up.

Leaner

Likes to rest their head on a supportive edge.

  • Bolster beds
  • Sofa-style beds
  • Beds with raised sides

Use the standard formula + supportive bolsters.

Frequently asked questions

What if my dog is between sizes?

We generally recommend choosing the larger size, especially for dogs that like to stretch out while sleeping.

What size bed does a puppy need?

Because puppies grow quickly, many pet parents choose a size that fits their dog's expected adult size. Check your breed in the breed size guide above for a typical adult size.

How thick should orthopedic foam be?

Most medium and large dogs do well with 4–7 inches of orthopedic foam. Use the weight-based recommendation in the calculator as a starting point and check the specifications of the bed you choose.

Are custom beds returnable?

Because custom beds are made specifically for each order, custom items are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged unless they arrive defective or do not match the specifications ordered.

What's the difference between inside and outside dimensions?

Outside dimensions measure the whole bed, including bolsters. Inside dimensions measure the usable sleeping area within the bolsters, which is smaller. On bolster and donut beds, make sure your dog's measurements fit the inside dimensions.
